The Client
Footlights is a multi-award-winning Company founded in 2005 by Jo Fisher. They deliver high-quality, specialist teaching in safe, fun and inclusive environments; to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, can fulfil their potential. They offer children and young people opportunities to learn through fun, engaging classes in acting, singing and dance, which teaches them not only performance technique but also transferable skills which will last a lifetime; building relationships, decision making, critical thinking as well as social mobility. Footlights have five strands to its business: Stage Schools, Education packages to schools including performances, Casting Agency, and Franchising. Recently, we added Venue Hire to our portfolio.


Challenge
Footlights Theatre School originally came to Atlas Mapping in 2017. They were trading in a region of the UK and started picking up lots of traction from interested potential franchisees. Similarly to many franchises starting out, they needed to know where to begin and what criteria to use for the creation of territories. As always with our territory mapping projects, to start the process and find a data-driven approach to the creation of their territories, we started off by analysing their customer and business data. Once we had the criteria, we mapped out the requested region. As momentum grew, we mapped out a few more regions for the brand. This was becoming ‘bitty’ and more difficult to manage.

Solution
Following all of the enquiries and to make things easier to manage with the territory network, they decided to map out the entire UK network. Before mapping out the entire network, there had been a new UK census, we wanted to make sure that the criteria had not changed and double-check the analysis results and criteria beforehand. We carried out our analysis due diligence and went ahead to map the UK.
Results
Using the most up-to-date data and finding the market penetration the criteria was reliable and data-driven. Understanding what was required for turnover and understanding customer values means the territories hold the opportunity for all franchisees to succeed. Using realistic and reliable drive times for the territories means that the customers can get to their classes.
Having the UK mapped out means that they can deal with every opportunity and have discussions on how they will make it work for them and the brand and not ‘if’ it will work.
Using the demographic data on where their potential customers are means that franchisees and the brand can make directed decisions about marketing and sales efforts within their territories.
