Challenge

Mr Charger, an established and successful electrical vehicle charging installation company, was ready to step up its expansion plans. Keen to take advantage of the rapidly developing vehicle and energy market in the UK, they planned to increase their service offering and also use the franchising model to cover more ground.

After a recommendation from their consultant, Mr Charger approached us to help sort out their territory planning for them. As soon as we identified that their potential customer base was going to look very different in 10 years than it does today, we could tell this was going to be an unusual and interesting challenge.

Solution

Our first task, as always, was to gather as much trade data as possible. This meant plotting the location of customers and jobs carried out by the company. Even though this isn’t necessarily representative of future franchises, it provides a realistic starting point for discussions.

It turns out their engineers were travelling much further to service customers than would be typical for a franchisee. This is actually quite common in “man and van” type operations and would likely continue to be the case for the early adopter franchisees too.

We could also see how many households were in each area and which type - detached, semi-detached or terraced. It was decided that with the future product range due to expand, all households would be considered as potential customers.

Working with Mr Charger, we estimated the potential growth rate in the market and how many customers the business could reasonably accommodate. This provided a final figure for the future potential of the business.

Results

Taking advantage of Vision’s user-friendly features, we were able to create the territory network of the future for Mr Charger.

Additional territories were temporarily allocated to the franchisee to service around their core territory, with the understanding that this expanded area would start to reduce as more and more customers were found closer to home.

The result is a well-structured and simple-to-understand territory network with clarity for all stakeholders.

We’re pleased to say the business has grown significantly since we undertook this project, with a large part of the country now being serviced by Mr Charger franchisees.
